When the dream of school becomes a reality, it turns into a project that involves the time and talents of many people. Such a dream was realized in Milicz, where a unique school was established within a single year. Every day the design of the school brought our attention to the advantages and disadvantages of our previous thinking about the educational space in our country. Will the school in Milicz create new trends not only in education but also in the learning space for students?
Dream 1 – use the inspirational past
The school was established in the former milician factory of baubles, which a few years ago transformed into KOM – Creative Multifunctional Object (pol. Kreatywny Obiekt Multifunkcyjny).
The originator and investor of the school and KOM is DEFTRANS. The main idea of the investment was to create a modern school space, also referring to the historical function of this place. The spirit of the inspirational past has been preserved with the project containing industrial character of postmodern buildings and the history of the baubles that is made up in the round windows and entrance door dominating the main facades. Key to the construction project prepared by the SIGMA design studio was creation of a large gym, restoration of the low-floor rooms and integration of the school with the space around.
Now the T-shaped school, behind the gray-red facade, covers bright, spacious corridors and comfortable classrooms. On the ground floor, you will find a well thought-out space for meetings and workshops called the Media room (pol. Mediateka), bright and full of culinary inspiration canteen and a modern sports hall with a climbing wall. Up the stairs there are a talents, music and design workshops, along with experiment and IT labs.
Dream 2 – Set up a creative and educational space
We invited young architects from the PORT group as well as younger designers, the pupils of the school, to the interior design process. In a joint workshop with architects, children described and drew their ideas of a dream school. There were places for quiet conversations, joint work and a friendly space for eating. These ideas were reflected in the PORT project, and some of them – such as the veritable garden or the natural “Green hides” – will be implemented gradually, as space is developed around the school.
Creating an educational and creative school space was one of the most difficult tasks at this stage of the project. Finding functional, simple and modern furniture for the classrooms was a challenge for designers and investors. The standard offer was not considered enthusiastic. We wanted something unique, yet simple, for our students, something that would stimulate their imagination and at the same time be aesthetically pleasing. Many of the furniture has been designed, manufactured and certified for special order by the school investor, DEFTRANS company: bathroom and mobile class cabinets, canteen and Media room tables, teacher room and secretariat furniture. The school is equipped with well-known compositions of Polish designers.
The Design Studio was “furnished” in the collection of the Oskar Zięta Package, and for the studio the Smart Collection was used, designed by Marta Krupiźka for VOX Furniture company (pol. Meble VOX). In Media room, play- and creative learning ground, right next to the sliding door with the Modulator, reign the Locosystem shelves and podiums by Karol Starczewski. The collection of Boleslawiec stoneware plates designed by Magda Gazur and Dorota Koziara adorn a very homely and cozy canteen.
The communication elements in the school, designed by Martyna Ząbecka, also have an educational value. The bathrooms are reigned by Pantone patterns, graphical information about ecology, architecture history while the clothing cabinets have a dedicated font to teach children the principles of typography.
Dream 3 – Design modern education
We watch carefully how students use the school and we modify the designs. Apart from the school as a place, we also design the most important – education – so that space and thought permeate. We also have workshops and meetings with designers whose furniture and objects surround students on a daily basis. We want to educate children and allow them to draw inspiration from the diverse experiences of the designers.
For us the School project has not been closed yet. This is a project for years, because the dreams of children and the challenges, that the educational environment is facing, are constantly evolving, and therefore the School of dreams will undergo constant change.
